Attempting Homemade Vegan Gummy Bears and Kitchen's Son Gummy Bear Mold Review

My kids and i have a lot of fun baking and candy making.  Silicone molds are one of our favorite things, we have a small collection of geeky themed molds so we can make Harry Potter, Star wars and Doctor Who themed treats. :)  So when i had the opportunity to review these gummy bear molds i jumped at the chance!  We all love gummy treats, but they are so often made with gelatin and as a vegetarian family we try to avoid it.  Sour patch kids are one of the few gummy candies that do not contain gelatin, but i was really excited to try making our own.

The molds really do work great! The bears pop right out, no sticking. They come out clean and the silicone mold is super easy to wash. The set i got came with two molds (50 bears each) and two droppers, so filling them it easy peasy. The molds are made of 100% premium, food grade silicone. FDA approved, BPA free. They are cold and heat resistant -40°F to 445°F. Safe for use in oven, dishwasher and freezer.

So after several failed attempts at chewy gummy bears, i finally came up with an acceptable soft fruit bite. Texture is somewhere between finger jello and very set jelly. They taste great, but are definitely a fruit bite rather than a gummy. They still popped out of the molds perfectly, and i love the details in the molds.

We rolled them in sugar and citric acid and made some super sour gummy bear fruit bites! They tasted fabulous!

This is the first recipe we tried. It is the main recipe i've found online at various different sites.  i used white grape juice. They came out really firm, but the texture was weird and the flavor was pretty bland.

Vegan Gummy Bears I

1 cup fruit juice
2 tablespoons agar powder
1-2 tablespoons sugar or honey
2-3 drops food coloring (optional)

STEP 1: In a small sauce pan, whisk juice and agar together and let sit for about 5 minutes before turning on heat.
STEP 2: Heat the liquid over medium heat, whisking frequently. When it starts to thicken, add your sugar or honey (if desired) and stir. Let the mixture simmer until it thickens to the consistency of paint, stirring constantly. This will take a couple of minutes.
STEP 3: Use the dropper to add the liquid into your molds.
STEP 4: Let cool at room temperature for 5 minutes, then place in the freezer for 20-30 minutes, Carefully pop them out of the molds. Store in an airtight container and refrigerate for up to 2 weeks.

This is the second recipe i tried.  So this recipe came out a bit too soft. It was more like jello. The flavor was fantastic though. The increased sugar and lemon juice really helped give it that sweet tart flavor.

Vegan Gummy Bears II

10 ounces 100% fruit juice
4 ounces lemon juice
1 cup sugar
1 tsp agar powder

Boil the juice and sugar together for 5 minutes then remove from heat. Add the agar powder and whisk until dissolved.  Pour into mold and place in fridge for 2 hours until set.

i've tried making this recipe several times increasing the amount of agar, but still can't come up with a good texture. i have one more recipe i want to try. It calls for lots of sugar and corn syrup...and heating to the soft ball stage. It will be a true candy, rather than a healthy 100% fruit juice snack. So i'm hoping that one has a bit of chew.

So even though our gummy bear recipes were did not make chewy gummy bears, we had a lot of fun trying! The molds really did work great and they can be used for gummies, fruit bites, hard candies, chocolate, ice etc.  i'm going to keep working on the gummy recipe and will share the recipe if i can come up with one that is truly a chewy solid gummy bear.

You can find our awesome Gummy bear molds at  http://kitchensson.com. they are currently only $7.99 on Amazon with prime.

i received this set of gummy bear molds at no cost in exchange for my honest review. i was not compensated.

LuLaRoe Review and Giveaway!

LuLaRoe seems to be the hottest trend right now!  Everywhere i look i see women sporting leggings in bold and wild patterns. i admit, i don't really get it. i'm not a leggings person at all.  In fact, i'm on the 'leggings are not pants' team.  lol.  That being said, i do understand how comfortable they are and they really can look cute when worn under a dress or long tunic.

When my friend Nicole approached me about reviewing a pair of LuLaRoe on my blog, i was hesitant at first, because they are just not my thing. So i asked her if instead she would want to do a giveaway, that way someone who actually wears leggings would receive a pair. even though they are not really my thing, she is an awesome lady and i'm happy to help her promote her business.

She still wanted to have me do the review so she sent a pair to my girl. My daughter is completely in love with them. They have this crazy video game print, and she just happened to have a minecraft shirt that almost matches perfectly. The shirt is longer in the back, so her bum is covered. ;)  The fabric on these is amazingly soft. i've heard it described and buttery soft, and that's a pretty good description.

In an effort to learn the story behind LulaRoe, i explored their official website a bit and found that they sell more than just wild print leggings. They actually have some very pretty dresses, skirts and i LOVE the Sarah Cardigan. They do have some crazy patterns, but they also are available in solid prints.

Nicole does a great job of putting together cute outfits and matching up sets. She really knows her stuff! She is very passionate about LuLaRoe and really does a great job with her online parties and promotions! Her next party is April 9th at 7pm  here!

i'm super proud of her and excited to be helping promote her business and offering a LuLaroe giveaway to all of you.  i really do like that LuLaRoe was started by a mom, and helps to empower other women. 'I believe in you' and 'you can do it' are the basic principles guiding LuLaRoe today.

One lucky winner will receive a surprise pair of LuLaRoe leggings!  You tell me your size and Nicole will pick the pair!

*The mandatory entries are to join Nicole's FB party group and Follow her on Instagram and leave a comment on this Blog post letting me know which you did.
Since i realize not everyone is on FB and Instagram,  you can do either one as the mandatory and get extra entries if you do both. If you do not do one or the other, your other entries will be void. Use the Rafflecopter below to enter.

Breaking bad habits with Buddy Trainer- Product Review

If i had known how challenging Border Collies were, i'm not sure we would have gotten one.  Sookie, our border collie is extremely smart, but also extremely energetic. She requires a lot of attention, and if  she doesn't get it she will start being destructive and picking up some bad habits. So when i was given the opportunity to review the Buddy Trainer -training collar, i was really excited.

So i'll admit, i'm not usually a fan of shock collars, however we used to have an underground fence system with the shock collar and it worked really, really well. It only took about a day or two for Sookie to learn the boundaries of the yard and avoid getting shocked. There was a warning beep before the shock, so she was very quick to learn to stop what she was doing as soon she heard the beep.
When our house burned down in 2013, the underground fence was destroyed and we never got around to replacing it.

Even though it's been a few years since we've had an underground fence, she pretty much stays right in the yard and has learned the boundaries of the property. She will occasionally go for a run in the woods behind out house, but she doesn't just wander.
Right after the fire, we rented a house, but were unable to take the dogs. So they stayed on our property. We had them in a fenced kennel. but almost everyday theu found a way to dig out and escape. During the weeks following the fire, she picked up a few bad habits mostly out of boredom. The worst of the habits was killing chickens, which she did a lot of that year.

Although it's been a couple of years since she has killed chickens, i've recently caught her stalking them again. She's really sneaky about it, so i know she knows better. Another habit i'd like to break her of is chasing cars, usually the mailman or ups guy. She doesn't do it every time, but when she does i usually catch her sitting on the edge of the road waiting for a car to come by. It's a dangerous habit and i don't want her getting hit.

So the cool thing about this training collar is that it has 4 different training methods. audible beep, light, vibrations and shocks. You can also adjust the levels ranging from 0-100 and it comes with a remote and has a 330-yard range. So the shock can be used as a last resort if she isn't responding to the other cues . Which means if i look out the door and see her at the mailbox, i can use the beep to remind her she's too close to the road.  Sookie is so smart, i really think that just the beep or vibration will enough to break her concentration when she is in that car/chicken stalking trance.

This past week, i spent a bit of time with her in the yard trying out the collar. She really did well with it, and i have a feeling she remember the underground fence collar, because the first time i made it beep when she was too close to the road she immediately stopped and sat down.

The main thing with this type of collar is consistency. i've working with her every day, rewarding good behavior and giving the audible beep when she gets too close to the chickens or road. i'm really pleased with how well it is working. So far, she has responded so well to the beep that i haven't had to use the vibration or other functions.

The Buddy Training system is very easy to use. i love that it's re-chargeable!  It comes with the collar, remote,  charger, instructions and two sets of the contact points in different sizes. It also has a testing bulb, so you can make sure it's working without shocking yourself. :)

i can't say how well this would work for all dogs, but it is working really well for Sookie. She responds to the beep sound by immediately stopping what is she is doing, which is what i was hoping. Another of her bad habits is barking incessantly, when she wants to play or come inside. Most bark collars give a shock when the dog barks, however she is supposed to be barking to protect the chickens from predators, so i don't want to teach her not to bark. She needs to learn what is acceptable, and what is not. The remote allows me to give her a audible que only when she is barking inappropriately.  i'll continue to praise her when she is barking at hawks, foxes or strangers, so she should learn what is acceptable and what is not.

i feel pretty confident that this will help to break those bad habits, and i won't even have to use the shock option. i have seen other remote collars, but most just have the shock. i really like that this one has the different training options, and adjustable levels.

It is available on amazon here for $34.99 http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01N7O2QCU

Climbing the Devil's Marbleyard- Q-band fitness tracker review. #getoutside

This weekend we decided to explore another area of the Appalachian trail.  Devil’s Marbleyard is a boulder field near Natural Bridge Virginia.

The landscape is covered in huge rocks, many that are the size of cars. Picture really do not do this place justice. Can you see that pink dot in the center of the photo? that's my daughter.  This place is really wild!  We really didn't know what to expect when we decided to come here and hike. Kenan said it was 1.5 miles to boulder field, 3 miles round trip. So i wore, a skirt and crocs which is what i typically wear hiking.

i did not realize we'd be climbing to the top of the boulder field, or i would have dressed much different. There isn't a trail through the boulder field, although there is one off to the side. We chose to climb the boulders. We really had no idea what we were getting into. Can you see the three black dots along the edge of the rocks in the back? i'm the one in the center. i was a bit behind everyone else, trying to scale rock faces in an ankle length skirt.

The view is absolutely amazing.  This picture is quite misleading, as it looks like the top. However, once you get to this point, there is a whole other  boulder field on the other side.  i truly wanted to cry.

Those trees up ahead? Yeah, that's the top.

Usually i'm the one to take all the pictures, but i had Kenan hold my camera so i could finish the climb easier. i'm almost at the top here, and my legs have almost turned to jello. i really didn't know if i was going to make it.

Not only did i make it to the top, but my fitness tracker gave me a thumbs up!! i've been wearing it for about a week to track my steps. Since i don't move much in the winter time i'm lucky if i get 50% of my steps in on a regular day. So as silly as it is, i'm very proud of this.

The view from the top, is incredibly beautiful. There were so many trees at the top, that we couldn't really see the boulder field we had just climbed. There were a few cliffs and places that overloaded it, but there were quite a few people up there already occupying those spots, so we didn't bother trying to get closer just for a picture.  Honestly, by the time we got to the top i was just ready to go home.  Rather than climb back down the boulders, we took the trail on our way down. It was challenging as well, because the ground was soft and sandy and very steep.

So now that we are starting to have a few nice days, we plan to be out hiking every weekend possible. i thought this would be a great opportunity to review my new Q-band fitness tracker!  It has Wireless Bluetooth Synchronization with iPhone & Android Devices. It keeps track of steps, calories burned and a sleep tracker. It uses the i-gotU Life app, it can also sync to Apple Health or Google Fit. i'm still figuring out all the features. It notifies me when i get fb notifications, emails, phone calls etc and also tells me when i've been sitting for too long. lol.   The app is easy to use, and keeps track of steps, calories and sleep. So far it seems to be a pretty good step counter, and i'm having fun keeping track of my steps and creating fitness goals.  My only criticism is that it doesn't keep track of heart rate. This is just the basic model, but they do offer a more advanced model that does have the heart detection.  i may end up investing in that one later on, so far i am really enjoying keeping track of my steps, and it motives me to do more when i'm not being active enough.

This one is  available on amazon for $49.99 shipped free with prime.  https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01MS5I5UU

i'm already getting excited about the spring. We have so many places we want to hike, kayak and camp. Our weather has been unseasonable warm for February, so i'm really getting the spring fever itch.  This year being more active is a huge goal for the whole family. We all spend too much time online, so getting outside and offline is really important.  We hiked parts of the Appalachian trail last year, and plan to hike several different parts this year.

The Devil's Marble yard is definitely an experience!  Make sure you are wearing good hiking/climbing shoes, bring a water and snacks! We were so unprepared for it. The pictures make it look like relatively flat, but rocky terrain. It's actually very steep, with huge boulders and deep crevices. Although you probably won't fall to your death climbing the boulders, breaking an ankle or cracking your skull are real possibilities! My kids absolutely loved it though, and we all had a pretty amazing time. Definitely one of the more challenging hikes we've done, but very worth it!

Stainless Steel Bento Box Storage Containers- Still working towards #noplastic

i'm still moving forward on my goal to eliminate most of the plastic in my kitchen. One area i still struggle with is storage containers and in the kids lunch boxes for school. Both kids take a reusable lunch box, and i try to use reusable containers instead of plastic bags as much as i can.  i've looked at different stainless steel lunch compartment boxes like planet box, but they just are not big enough for my high school son.   i use a lot glass for storage in my kitchen, but the kids are not allowed to have glass containers on the school bus, so i can't pack glass in their lunch boxes.

So when i had the opportunity to review these Stainless steel bento box storage set, i was thrilled! The set comes with three different sized containers, and leak proof lids.  The lids are made from plastic, but it is BPA free and has a silicone ring seal inside to prevent leaking. These containers fit inside each other with their lids on for easy storage.

The containers are lightweight, but durable. They are made from 304 (18/8) grade stainless steel and are completely food safe  The  different sizes hold approx 1 cup, 2 cups and 4 cups.  So these work well to store leftover, or to pack a good size meal for a growing teenager. The only downside, is that they can not be heated in a microwave, so they are best for packing cold foods.

  • BENTO LUNCH BOX SET: These food grade stainless steel lunch box set includes three different sized boxes. Great for leftovers, entrees, sandwiches, salads and snacks. This set makes it easy to transport food to work and school each day.

  • STAINLESS STEEL: Our high quality food storage container set does not degrade or rust. Each stainless steel box is carefully constructed to be reliably rust proof, unlike other so-called stainless steel containers. Stainless steel does not break, like glass, and is super lightweight in your lunch bag. Our design is durable, reusable and eco-friendly.

  • LEAK PROOF LUNCH CONTAINERS: Each container has a plastic lid with a liquid tight seal that fits on easily. No need to worry about spills or leakage.

  • DISHWASHER SAFE: The containers are dishwasher safe for easy cleaning. They do not absorb odors or stain like plastic.

This Stainless Steel Bento Box Food Storage set is available on amazon for $24.99.
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01M8JU1WE/

These are a nice addition to my kitchen and help me to get closer to my goal of #noplastic in my kitchen. i like this set a lot, my only complaint is the plastic lids. i would prefer them to be entirely silicone, but i appreciate that they are at least BPA free and have the silicone seals.

*i received this set for free or heavily discounted in exchange for my honest and unbiased review. i was not compensated for my review.

New Year, New Resolutions. #noplastic

So i know i already mentioned that i've never been one for resolutions, but this year i really wanted to start off the New Year with some goals to work towards. De-cluttering and removing most of the plastic from my kitchen is is one of those goals.  When our house burned down in 2013, we were gifted/donated a ton of stuff, and now coming around to 4 years later we are still using a lot of it. Some items i kept because i needed them and hadn't gotten around to replacing them, but many were kept because of emotional attachment. Even the plastic measuring cup set i've been using evokes memories of the kindness of the neighbors that gave it to us.

This year i am finally ready to let it go.

Pro kitchen Chef contacted me about working with them to promote their stainless steel kitchen products, and i thought this would be a good opportunity to finally replace all that hand-me-down plastic with Stainless steel.  The appliances in my kitchen are all stainless, so it's not only functional, but it looks nice as well.

ProChef Kitchen tools set me this Stainless steel kitchen utensil set to review. It features 6 different utensils and a rotating stand. Each of the utensils are made from one seamless pieces of stainless steel, they are all heat and dishwasher safe. The set also includes a slotted turner, a ladle, a pasta fork, a turner and a spoon. The handles are quite long, and they feel very strong and durable. i love that the stand rotates making it easy to grab the utensil you need.

The large slotted spoon/skimmer is my favorite new tool. i'm not sure where this has been all my life! It will be perfect when i'm blanching and freezing garden produce.

It also works great when i'm making cheese. i'm able to scoop out all the curds, while the majority of the whey stays in the pot. Then transfer it to a colander to drain.  i use to pour the curds and whey into a colander to drain it, but there is so much whey it would always make a huge mess. This is so much easier, and less messy.

With all of the utensils on a convenient stand, it also means less clutter in the drawers.  i'll be working this week on cleaning out all those plastic utensils cluttering up my kitchen drawer and passing them on to someone else. This is big step in my #noplastic resolution goal.

i'll be sharing more #noplastic posts as i replace items in my kitchen with non-plastic solutions. i already use a lot of glass, pottery, wood and stainless steel, but do have a fair share of plastic in my kitchen as well.

Did you make any New Year's resolutions? What are your goals for the new year?

i received this set of stainless steel kitchen utensils in exchange for my honest and unbiased review. My opinions are my own.

New Year's No plastic Resolutions and French Press Review. #noplastic

So hard to believe it is 2017. We rung the New year in at home, sitting around playing bored games with the kids.  i don't usually do a lot of New Year's resolutions, but this year i do have a few goals that i am working towards. One of them is to eliminate plastic in my kitchen and replace as much as i can with wood, glass, pottery and stainless steel products.

My husband loves French press coffee. We've been using one i picked up at the goodwill a few years ago. It has a glass cup, but the lid and handle are plastic. So when i had the opportunity to try out a stainless steel french press, i was very excited to get the old one of my kitchen and pass it on to someone else.
This Stainless Steel French Press by #BitElegant is a 4 cup french press. It holds 34 oz. It is made from stainless steel and borosilicate glass, so it is thermal shock resistant. It's easy to use and dishwasher safe.

Using a french press is easy, just remove the lid and add your freshly ground coffee to the cup, then pour in boiling water. Stir slightly, replace lid and let seep around 4 minutes. Then slowly press down the plunger, which traps the grounds in the bottom of the press so you are not drinking grounds. When you use a french press the grounds steep instead of filter, so the coffee tastes richer. You taste all the flavors, which adds to the experience.

The press cup has a pour spout for easy pouring. French presses can also be used for brewing loose leaf teas. i really like the look of this french press, and fits well with the rest of the stainless steel in my kitchen. It really makes a fantastic cup of coffee. We grind our own beans for it, and the finer the grind the richer the cup.

This set is part of the Delux series and would make a great gift for the coffee lover in your life. It includes 3 extra micro filters and a spoon to scoop your coffee . The glass can be removed from the base for easy cleaning. My only suggestion is that i would love to see this set come with a metal spoon instead of plastic, since i'm trying to eliminate  plastic.

Overall it's very nice set! Available on Amazon http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01H4U5FA8/ Use the following code QUG5EUSY at check out to get 20% off as a new year promotion. The coupon is good until  31 January, 2017.

Crust-less Mini Quiche with freshly ground salt and pepper - Spice mill review

Mini-quiche are my new favorite thing. They are so easy to make and delicious. If you have a silicone cupcake pan, they don't stick AT ALL! So clean up is super easy.

i intended to take pictures of all the steps in the process, but totally failed to do it, but i had already taken a few pictures of my mini-quiche so i thought i could still put together a post. They truly are so easy you don't need the step by step pictures.  The main ingredients you need for these are eggs, cream or milk, cheese, seasoning, a muffin pan and whatever else you want to add.

Lightly spray your muffin pan with oil. Then in a medium size bowl, use a fork to mix your eggs and cream.  Then stir in the cheese and other ingredients. i used a measuring cup to fill each cavity with the egg mixture, then seasoned it with freshly ground salt and pepper.
My new salt and pepper grinders are by #Dailykitchen.  They are really nice large glass spice mill shakers with the grinders built into the lid. The stainless steel matches my appliances, and they are so easy to use. My mom is going to be thrilled, it's been almost 4 years since our housefire, and i finally have salt and pepper shakers again.  :) lol.

Once your cups are filled, bake at 350 for approx. 20 minutes. Check with a toothpick in center to make sure they are done.

Let them cool slightly, then pop them out. they are so good.

Spinach mushroom mini-quiche

4 eggs Large eggs
1/2  shredded mozzarella
1/2 cup feta
A little olive oil (for cooking the mushrooms)
1 cup fresh spinach
1/2 - 1 cup chopped mushrooms
1 medium tomato diced (optional)
1-2 Tbsp, heavy cream or milk
fresh basil shredded (optional)
Freshly ground Salt and Pepper, to taste

heat the oil in a skillet, and add sliced mushrooms and cook until tender 4-5 min. Add fresh spinach and cook until wilted. Remove from heat and set aside. In a medium mixing bowl, whisk the eggs and cream until combined. Add the cooked mushroom/ spinach mixture, the cheeses, fresh tomato and basil/ Mix well. Use a measureing cup to scoop mixture into lightly oiled silicone muffin pan. Add freshly ground salt and pepper to taste.
Bake for at 350 for around 20 min. or until tooth pick stuck in center comes out clean.
Recipe makes 12 mini-quiche.

*i received the Spice Mill salt and pepper shakers in exchange for my honest review. i was not compensated. i felt that incorporating them into a recipe and showing them in use was the best way to test them out for my review. i'm very pleased with these shakers, and really love they way they match my kitchen. i was not compensated for this post.
