The Conscious Kitchen: The New Way to Buy and Cook Food- to Protect the Earth, Improve Your Health, and Eat Deliciously by Alexandra Zissu
This overview was taken straight from Barnesandnoble.com
Alexandra Zissu walks readers through every kitchen-related decision with three criteria in mind: what’s good for personal health, what’s good for the planet, and what tastes great. Learn, among other things, how to:
- Keep pesticides, chemicals, and other harmful ingredients out of your diet
- Choose when to spend your dollars on organic fruit and when to buy conventionally grown
- Avoid plastic—including which kinds in particular and why
- Figure out what seafood is safe to eat and is sustainable
- Use COOL (country of origin labels) to your advantage
- Determine if a vegetable is genetically modified just from reading its PLU (price look up) code
- Decipher meat labels in the supermarket
- Cook using the least energy—good for the earth and your wallet
- Eat locally, even in winter
- Understand what “natural” and other marketing terms really mean
- Buy packaged foods wisely
Navigate farmers’ markets, giant supermarkets, and every shop in between to find the freshest and healthiest local ecologically grown and produced meat, dairy, fruits, and vegetables—no matter where you live
With The Conscious Kitchen as your guide, you will never again stand in the market bewildered, wondering what to buy. You can feel confident you are making the best possible choices for you, your family, and our planet.

ReplyDeleteI already *like* you on facebook ~ wendy ritchey
ReplyDeleteAs my plastic storage containers break down from being used, new ones will be purchased, but made from glass not plastic. I have butter fingers so this may get costly! hehehe
ReplyDeleteLike Wendy, I've already *liked* you on the FB as well.
ReplyDeleteWe have switched to all glass storage containers, gone cloth from wash rags to napkins, & started composting again :o)

ReplyDeleteI "like" you on facebook and follow you personally on fb, too.

ReplyDeleteWe have eliminated paper towels from our kitchen and use hemp napkins and dishtowels instead!
ReplyDeleteI already "like" you on facebook too :o)
ReplyDeleteI'm now a blog follower as well! xo~jay
ReplyDeleteThanks for the generous giveaway Mama!! Looks like a great book and something I would put to good use. We try to do a lot of raw eating in the summer so as to not use the energy of the stove and we grill a lot. We also compost and grow a garden.
ReplyDeletethanks again!
I am a facebook fan! :)
ReplyDeletefollowing your beautiful blog! :)
ReplyDeletewell, we try pretty hard (growing and saving food for one...) but i want to get the rest of our JUNK out of the pantry and work more on making more of our foods (breads, tortillas, etc)
ReplyDeletethanks!!
and i'm a fan!!
ReplyDeleteOne thing I do is that I do not use any paper products. We use hemp jersey towels for most cleanup projects. We use real plates and flatware, even for parties. And we use cloth napkins.

I'm a vegetarian so I try to have a conscious kitchen by reading every label and making sure there aren't any unwanted substances in them.

Nobody's perfect :) I try to remember to put my fabric bags back in the car so I can use them for groceries - and also shopping at my local farmers' market.
ReplyDeleteI'm already your "friend." (Even though you won the last pink lemonade lip balm :)
ReplyDeleteWe got rid of all teflon in our kitchen. I am learning to season and care properly for some pretty old cast iron. I also am working to have as little disposable anything, including plastic wrap...it's a challenge.
ReplyDeleteI follow you this blog on Google.
ReplyDeleteI am a fan on FB :)
ReplyDeleteWe have already switched to no plastic, use cloth napkins, natural cleaning products, cloth diapers (ok, that's ending, but gladly) and buy as much organic as we can afford to.
ReplyDeleteOh, and I follow you on facebook too, as Apryl Miller :)
ReplyDeleteWe have a garden and we compost. I try really hard to remember my fabric grocery bags when I go shopping.
ReplyDeleteAlready 'like' you on Facebook!
ReplyDeleteI also follow your blog!
ReplyDeleteTrying to follow here, but I'm not too smooth on how to comment in the three required places! I'm a fairly good recycler, use CFL bulbs, reusable bags, and eat fresh and locally grown as much as possible.
ReplyDeleteAnd I follow your blog - does that count? :)
ReplyDeleteWe are using reusable bags for grocery shopping instead of the plastic bags.,
ReplyDeleteI "like" you on facebook.,
